On Grownass Man, the debut from Vernon’s latest side project the Shouting Matches, he ventures once again into rock’s uncool zone, playing around with bar-band blues and raspy blue-eyed soul with long-time pals Phil Cook of Megafaun and Vernon’s pre-Bon Iver band DeYarmond Edison, and Brian Moen of Peter Wolf Crier and Laarks. It’s yet another bold left turn in a career already filled with them, and the least consequential record he’s made yet.
